Newborns & Maternity
I’m interested in newborn pictures–when should I book with you?
In short, immediately (best case scenario is during your pregnancy). :) If you contact me during your pregnancy, we will tentatively pencil you in within a week of your due date, as I like to schedule my newborn sessions within the first ten days of life. I know, it seems like there is so much going on, and there is, but I make it easy for you. You can either come to my studio for the traditional dreamy, sweet little newborn shots, or I come to your home if you’d like (especially if you have a cute little nursery you’d like in your photos).
What are your sessions like?
It’s not uncommon for newborn sessions to be up to three hours long. It really all depends on your baby and the type of shots you want. If you really really want those sleepy newborn shots, where your baby is curled up in that sweet little pose, I will patiently work with your baby to get him or her to fall (and stay) asleep. In doing this, I keep my studio space warm. Envision about 85 degrees warm. Your baby has been nice and toasty in his or her womb for nine months, and I like to keep babies happy. And sleepy. I also use a sound machine to simulate a womb-like environment. So make sure to block off a nice chunk of time.
You can also plan to relax while I do all the work. :) I do ask that parents get in the shots, so make sure to come prepared. These moments are so fleeting and precious, and they go by so quickly that I like to document the beautiful, loving connection between parents and babe.
You want me to get pictures within the first 10 days of life? Doesn’t two months count as a newborn?
It really depends on the type of shots you want. No matter what age you have your baby photographed at, it will be priceless and you will love that you have professional portraits done.
If you want those shots where your baby is sleeping and in a nice “curly” position, then time really is important. It’s the easiest to photograph your baby during this time. He or she will likely still be in his/her “sleep coma”, and will be more easily maneuverable. Plus, baby acne likely hasn’t set in yet, and your baby is still in his/her precious folded up “womb like” position.
Have you already had your baby and still want some of those newborn shots?
No problem, just call as soon as you can. Although my schedule is busy, I make special accommodations for newborns.
What about clothing? Should I bring any?
If you have any keepsakes, favorite blankets, or cute outfits, absolutely bring them. Keep in mind that some babies don’t like being changed too frequently, so make sure you have your 1-2 “must have” outfits and hold the others loosely. :) Otherwise, I like to photograph most of my newborns in their birthday suits. I find it represents their innocence and newness in such a precious and fresh way. I also have diaper covers, headbands, and hats that you’re more than welcome to use. Or, feel free to bring your own.
I’m pregnant!!!! When should we do our session?
Ideally, I like to photograph pregnant mamas between 33 – 37 weeks of pregnancy. (Having said that I have done portraits done at an earlier stage and also at a later stage.) You’ll have a beautiful belly, and having your portraits taken professionally really is a beautiful way to commemorate this growing life inside of you.
Nothing fits. What should I wear?
The focus of our session will be your beautiful belly and your connection with your baby. And if possible, your partner and/or family will also be in some photos. You don’t need to wear anything flashy or fancy. Jeans (even ones that don’t zip up all the way) with a plain colored top or camisole work wonderfully. A scarf around your bust with a bare belly is also stunningly beautiful. Call me and I can talk with you more about what you feel most comfortable in, and I am more than happy to make suggestions.
